Pentecostal Temple Part Deux

After photographing the Sunday services at the Pentecostal Temple, I was invited to attend their 75th anniversary barbecue the following Saturday. Also, after talking to Neil for about five minutes (it didn't require much thought at all), I decided I would pursue the Pentecostal Temple as a project. Cool story, brah. Anyway, I went to the barbecue on Saturday, mostly to show my face, but maybe to also find a moment outside of the church building. I was warmly welcomed by everyone, and hustled into the food line where I chatted with some of the people, eventually sitting down to eat lunch with them. I heard some interesting stories and learned a bit, so I didn't bother looking for a feature there.

As I went to leave, one of the people I had lunch with informed me that there was a group of men outside praying over someone, and that I should check it out. And so I did. The light wasn't in my favor, but I took the time to shoot a similar situation from the previous assignment in a different setting and in different ways. They prayed over him for about 20 minutes, and then they asked if he wanted to be baptized, he excitedly said yes. Hearing this, and knowing the access, I immediately found the pastor and asked if I could come along. He also excitedly said yes. As I was walking to my car, the three men who were praying over Art asked if I was coming. I said "definitely."

It was pretty interesting to be right next to the baptismal pool surrounded by others who were praying over Art as he was submerged into the water. I grew up in church, I'm a PK (pastor's kid), so I was baptized too, but to be there with a camera, shooting without them being at all awkward about it? Incredible. Also, Art totally had a spring in his step after being baptized -- I had seen him earlier in the day as he hobbled out of the bathroom. It was an incredible experience.

Jeff Smith, the photo editor at CM-Life, asked if I could shoot a feature for the paper. But it was raining, so I had no inclination to do go out and find a one. So, I was chatting with Eric Dresden, the EIC, and we decided to shoot a joke feature, and then turn it in the system. Here's the photo.

And the best caption since the Squirrel caption:
Michigan City resident Derek "Pablo" Resd'n walks out into the unhappy sky, as it pours tears of sorrow and loss unto the campus of Central Michigan University, while some chick with a pink umbrella mean mugs Pablo because his hat is too cool for school. The unsightly weather is threatening to last much of the Thursday and continue into Friday, with a potential for frost and snow in the mornings. "I'm not happy. Not at all. In fact, I'm right furious about this whole situation," Resd'n said. "I can't believe the upper atmosphere would do that to the lower atmosphere. Sometimes I think the upper atmosphere, specifically the Thermosphere, completely forgets about the Troposphere's feelings." Experts on the subject haven't the faintest clue what Resd'n was referring to.

2009's game was incredibly exciting. This game wasn't. However, I got to shoot it with my good friend Neil, and some cool State News kids, Lauren Wood and Matt Radick.

All in all, it was a fun day, even if CMU lost 45-7.

Livin' on Love (JRN 521 Final Project)

So over the last month and a half I've been working on a piece for my JRN 521 class, taught by Ryan Wood. The goal of the class was, among other things, to create a longer-term story based off an issue that we drew out of a hat at the beginning of the semester. I got consumption/consumerism, but it ended up turning more into focusing on budget issues and family dynamics. I found my story thanks to Nathan Morgan. He was pretty pumped about the prospect, and told me to run with it, so I did. Below is the final project I turned in for class.

I think I'm going to pick up the story after I get back from Alaska in August. John Tully, who originally shot the Parsons for an MDN assignment a year and a half back, suggested extending the project to the surrounding areas of Midland County, and it's definitely something I'm interesting and will be considering when I get back.

Anyway. Enjoy, and thanks for looking. And a huge thanks goes to Nathan Morgan, who helped me edit several times through the project, and also gave me the idea for how to shoot the interview and what other situations to look for. Also, to Ryan Wood for pushing me this semester.

Paige and I spent an ungodly amount of hours in the computer lab over the weekend. On Sunday, we got into the lab at about 11am, and we didn't leave until 2pm on Monday. And Sunday was a pretty swell day weather-wise....We felt like we were trapped. We almost died. This is Paige looking out the lone window onto the sunbathed campus. People were enjoying the day. We were going insane.

Oh, and Sara eventually stumbled into the lab as well after shooting all day.

The project will be up soon.

In the mean time, here is a picture of me as well. Tired as all hell. Working on my video. 60+ frames printed out and laid on the floor as I listened to my video over. and over. and over.

Nathan Morgan asked if I could find a weather feature or pictorial while I was dropping dumping photos from earlier assignments. I told him I'd see what I could find, but after scouring the events calenders, I found nothing. So I walked down to the Tridge hoping to find something weathery over there, but instead I found a squirrel. So I shot a squirrel. And wrote a ridiculous caption.

The fox squirrel is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America, thriving best among oak, hickory, walnut and pine trees that produce winter-storable foods. Sometimes being referred to as raccoon squirrel, or monkey-faced squirrel, they are also mistaken for red squirrels and grey squirrels, despite physical differences such as size and color. Fox squirrels rely on their agility, both climbing and jumping, to escape predators.

I went on a feature hunting drive (the final destination to pick up my car from home) with Jake the other day, and I decided to shoot only film. So I packed up a couple rolls, grabbed my 28mm and 135mm, and hopped in the car. I ended up shooting about 2.5 rolls (first roll was already half used) on the trip. Unfortunately, my camera made the dick move of not rewinding a roll properly, so that roll got wrecked...Which sucked cause I thought I had a pretty nice frame on it. Anyway, here's a collage from an abandoned house we stopped at.

The game was pretty awful. Felt like I was watching 5th graders play street ball.

Flash Mob Rave

Approximately 2,500 CMU students congregated at the CMU Park Library to take part in the "Flash Mob Rave." It wasn't that great. Pretty not-so epic. Maybe my expectations were high. Maybe CMU is kinda lame.

Anyway, I walked into the library at 7:40 with my roommate, Adam. As soon as we walked in, we saw students pressed up against the railings of the upper three floors. We went up the stairs to the second floor, but couldn't go any further, as CMU Police had blocked off access to the other floors. So, we waited for 8:00 to roll around, and the event to start. Adam had his wide angle on, and started shooting overalls of the scene as it unfolded, I on the other hand, looked for a moment. I looked at the people directly above me, looking over the railing, calling out to each other, laughing...I popped on my 50mm and started looking. I spied a girl with her hands over her mouth, slightly leaning over the railing, so I framed it, focused it, but decided it wasn't worth it. As soon as I did, however, a girl only a few spots away reached way out over the railing, stuck her hand out and yelled to someone below her. I focused as quickly as I could, fixed my framing as much as I could, and fired off a couple frames. I looked at it, and was like...Huh, that's pretty cool. Except that shitty light in the corner (oh, crop, I'm sorry Nathan Morgan)...

Now I was stuck. I couldn't get up to the 3rd floor, but it was too loud, so every time I tried to yell, she couldn't hear me. I was bemoaned the fact that I could not get this girl's name (for journalistic purposes only, mind you). I continued looking for moments from above, while keeping my eye on the girl and snapping a couple other frames of her and her friend. At one point, they saw me taking pictures and did the 'ole thumbs up routine. I tried to get her attention then, but failed. People started to chant and laugh, yell and sing. Some threw toilet paper, other tossed paper in the air and let it flutter to the floors below. A full sized sheet of paper fell to my feet, and I had an idea. I grabbed my pen, wrote a quick note;

"Hello, my name is Sean, and I work for CM-Life. Could I get your name, class standing, and hometown for use in a photo? Both you (zebra striped sweater) and your friend (in the teal shirt). Thanks!

I crumpled it up into a ball, and then motioned to her. And motioned to her. And motioned to her. Finally, a girl next to her noticed me, and tapped her on the shoulder. I held the ball of paper up and made a throwing motion, which she understood, and gave me a thumbs up. I tossed it, trying to keep my trajectory straight, but with enough oomph to get it to her. I watched the paper go up, a seemingly perfect throw, but toward the end, it started to curve left. I thought to myself, "Crap, this is gonna suck," and was convinced I would have to write a new note, or go searching for the current one amidst a sea of people. It curved left, no longer the perfect through headed right for her outstretched hands, and it started to fall short of clearing the bar. I had underestimated the height of the railing. She eyed the paper the whole way, and realizing where it was headed, reached out her arms as far as she could. And caught it. To be honest, it was a pretty epic catch. Like those one-handed catches you see in football, the ones that they replay a couple thousand times. Or the last second snag of the baseball (or hockey puck, which is way cooler). She raised her hands up in triumph, and then unfolded the paper, read it, looked down, and said "yeah, one minute," and left the railing. Sure enough, a minute later, she came back to the edge, leaned over, and dropped it. It landed at my feet, I waved at her and shouted "thank you!"

I had it. I had gotten her name. And that was that. I moved on. She moved on. We both went our separate ways. Done and done. But it was pretty cool. I looked for her after things died down to get a quote, but I couldn't find her. Oh well.

Just to appease the likes of Josh Kodis, here is the first basketball blog post. I haven't shot basketball in a while. And it shows. 12 more home games left to get in the groove, plus whatever away games I get to shoot.
